Rockdale eyes 1,500 for first day enrollment
Body

Monday is the first day of classes for the 2018-19 school year and Rockdale ISD administrators are expecting it to look a great deal like the first day of 2017-18.

Pam Kaufmann, assistant superintendent, said last year’s first-day enrollment was 1,507 and Rockdale ISD began this week with an enrollment of 1,498.

THE NUMBERS—That translates into a possibility of an enrollment increase.

Current enrollment at the elementary is 371, compared to 391 last year.

“And we always get a good group of enrollees on the first day at the elementary,” Kaufmann said.

The numbers are already trending up at two campuses, 351 at the junior-high, compared to 339 last year and 331 at the intermediate compared to 330 on the first day last year.

Rockdale High School had an enrollment of 447 on the first day of 2017-18 and it was 440 heading into this week.

BASICS—There’s not much doubt what the biggest change students and parents will see as they return for another year.

The old Tiger Field, which stood for 84 years, has been razed and a brand new one is a month away from completion.

A finishing date of Sept. 15 is forecast.

Changes aren’t always in facilities.

“This year we are building back on some of the initiatives we started last year, which include a focus on some back-to-the-basics strategies like phonics instruction and foundational math skills,” Kaufmann said.

“We will continue our efforts to offer more opportunities for parent input through district and campus committees,” she said.

“We welcome parents and community members who have ideas on how we can strengthen Rockdale ISD for our students and our community. Contact a campus administrator if you want to get involved,” she said.
