The Rockdale Independent School District school board approved the budget for fiscal 2021-22 Monday night in a meeting in the conference center on the high school campus.

The budget includes $16,345,308 in the general fund, $1,143,237 in food services and $2,480,470 in debt service. The administration also noted that RISD will receive an increase in state revenue $300,000 more than was anticipated.

Following the presentation, the room listened to Terry Smith, a former Texas school administrator, who spoke on behalf of Austin law firm of Sara Leon & Associates.

This led to the approval of Sandow Lakes Ranch Solar I’s application for a limitation on the taxable property value for school district maintenance and operations tax purposes for the proposed facility.

Assistant superintendent Pam Kaufmann presented the School Health Advisory Committee’s annual report. The committee, made up of RISD parents, rewrote the District Wellness Plan, worked with the schools on the Learn Safe Plan and participated in the Walk Across Texas, which is an eightweek program designed to help Texans “establish the habit of regular physical activity,” according to its website.

The board also approved the 2021-2022 Teacher Salary Schedule and District Compensation Plan and Board Operating Procedures.

Several certified personnel hires were approved at the meeting, including Donna Biddinger, elementary art/music; LuToria Brickhouse, high school English language arts/reading; Katie Lassetter, junior high/coach; Robert Lampert, high school math; and Melanie Seltzer, high school science/coach.

The board was also informed of resignations from Chance Betchan (career technology education teacher), Francesca Edmonson (intermediate teacher), Brooke Seabolt (high school math) and Suzanne Schwarz (Burleson-Milam Special Services transition specialist).
