Meeting in regular session Monday, Rockdale ISD administrators and board trustees discussed a property gift offer from the city, and discussed whether to adjust the pay schedule for hourly workers.
Supt. Dr. Denise Monzingo said the City of Rock-dale reached out to her wanting to know if the district was interested in a parcel of unmaintained land east of Miller Street by the Tiger Stadium’s visitor parking lot.
RISD Director of Finance Genella Korenek said the school and city are still in discussion with adjacent landowners, who have to give the district their consent before the city can follow through.
Trustees and administrators watched a Powerpoint presentation by the district’s human resources specialist Christy Betchan.
Betchan said she has prioritized improving recruitment and retention for the schools by putting new hire forms online, increased training for substitute teachers and improving communication in and out of the district.
She said the district makes job postings available on Handshake, a start-up that is geared toward helping educators find a position, and Troops for Teachers, a website that helps former educators.
CHANGE—Korenek told the board the district would like to switch hourly workers at the school from a 12-month pay schedule to a 10-month pay schedule that would be effective in July 2020.
Korenek emphasized that workers would make the same amount of money over a calendar year.
“We’ll be moving toward a time-sheet based pay where workers will be paid monthly after all the sheets have been submitted,” she said. “In the past, workers were paid first before they worked and we would have to figure how to even their paychecks throughout an additional two months during the summer that they don’t work.
“It will be different, but we have a year to work through this and talk with our staff members.”
DIPLOMAS—Six diplomas were award.
Assistant Supt. Pam Kaufmann, starting in September, 2018, districts were allowed a calendar year to award high school diplomas to students who didn’t pass the required mandated state test.
The program is available for former students who entered ninth grade before the 2011-2012 school year.
“I’m so impressed with the former students I’ve talked to,” Kaufmann said. “A couple of them told me they were guaranteed an increase in pay once they received their diplomas.
“Graduating is something that really means a lot to them and you could tell by the amount of family members that arrived and how emotional everyone was getting.”
