Valedictorian, salutatorian rankings go through end of first semester
Body

If Rockdale ISD students don’t return to class for the final six week of the school term—as now seems increasingly likely—the district has prepared updated grading guidelines.

According to Supt. Dr. Denise Monzingo, for the 2020 graduating class, the second semester (spring 2020) will not count toward their spring GPA.

“For the purpose of determining honors to be conferred during graduation activities, including the valedictorian and salutatorian, the district will calculate class rank using grades available at the time of calculation at the end of the first semester of the senior year,” she said.

For the graduating classes of 2021-2023, any high school credit courses taken in spring, 2020, which would typically be factored into GPA and class rank will not be included in the calculation, Dr. Monzingo said.

“While these are difficult decisions to make, we believe these modifications are in the best interest of all students and honors the instructional integrity of our grading system,” she said.

In a rare Saturday session, trustees met and approved a resolution of authority to give the superintendent authority in specific areas during the COVID-19 emergency.

Those areas include student grading and also the following:

Payment of employees, school calendar changes, employee leave, waivers, open records requests, procurement of goods and services, hiring of instructional personnel, interlocal agreements, donations and instructional parameters.
