The Board of Trustees recognized the following student groups: Kids Heart Challenge Elementary School Top Earners, Kids Heart Challenge Intermediate School Top Earners, Golden Girls Drill Team, Girls Basketball Playoffs, THSCA Academic All-State, Regional and State Powerlifting Qualifiers.

Campus pr inc ipa l s reported to the board on how staff and students celebrated Texas Public Schools Week. Some of the events highlighted across the district included guest readers, student performances, student awards ceremonies and parent presentations.

Hunter Hamrick, Rockdale Athletic Director, gave an update on participation numbers, district alignments and celebrated the Boys Soccer team and Girls Basketball team for securing spots in playoffs. He also discussed the upcoming Spring Meet the Tigers this Saturday which will include an alumni game, Facebook auction and fish fry.

Assistant Superintendent Kathy Pelzel reviewed the district strategic plan for stakeholder engagement, including student and family relationships, as well as community relationships. She discussed the process of collecting baseline data this year in the following areas: parent communication, community outreach events, community service involvement, higher education partnership events and parent involvement activities.

Supt. Denise Monzingo, reviewed construction updates at Rockdale Elementary, Rockdale Junior High and Rockdale High School. Concrete pouring and fencing has been completed at the Elementary School and they have started working on inside wing renovations. Rockdale Junior High has started construction and began demolition during Spring Break. The district has also funded the replacement of the junior high school roof for sections that were not covered within the scope of the bond project. Dr. Monzingo expressed appreciation for EBCO and their work to ensure the project remains within the bond budget.

The board approved a contingent fee contract with the Law Firm of McCreary, Veselka, Bragg & Allen P.C. for the collection of delinquent property taxes pursuant to Texas Tax Code sections 6.24 (d) and 6.30 as presented. The board approved the readoption of Texas Tax Code sections 33.07, 33.08 and 33.11 as presented.

The board discussed a motion to amend the Rockdale ISD District of Innovation Plan, permitting attendance committees to grant credit or final grades to students with attendance below 75%, provided they achieve a passing grade, exhibit content mastery, and fulfill all stipulations outlined in the approved plan. The motion was tabled to give the district the opportunity to outline essential components and procedures before the board proceeds with any action.

The board deliberated on potential start times for the 2024-2025 school year, engaging in a lengthy conversation regarding the need to address overcrowding on buses resulting from a shortage of bus drivers and the number of students requiring transportation. In response to safety concerns, the board voted to stagger start and end times, aiming to reduce the number of students on each bus route. As part of this plan, buses will run each route twice, accommodating RES/RIS students during one run and RJH/RHS students during the other.
