The Rockdale ISD, and every other school district in the state of Texas and beyond, is in Star Trek territory, so far as opening the 2020-21 school year is concerned.

They are going where no one has gone before.

With COVID-19 showing few signs of letting up, Texas schools will start next month but just what kind of learning experience will be in store for the state’s students is something that needs to be worked out, and pretty quickly.

Rockdale ISD Supt. Dr. Denise Monzingo told The Reporter, “the local district is moving ahead to create a plan” and will release it to parents through a town hall type phone conference on Thursday, July 16.

The RISD shut down school campuses during spring break, March 16-20, and they did not reopen for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year.

Education continues, however, through on-line learning.

‘CLASSROOM’—Gov. Greg Abbott, and top education officials, have continued to maintain the belief that “the proper place for students is in the classroom.

However, the continuing surge on COVID-19 cases has perhaps triggered some re-assessing.

On Friday Abbott said the state planned to start the 2020-2021 school year “on time as scheduled,” but added: “If we continue to see COVID spreading the way it is right now, it may be necessary to employ that flexibility and use online learning.”

Officials in some of the state’s largest school districts have theorized the 2020-2021 school year could involve a mixture of face-to-face and online learning.

The governor emphasized that health and safety of teachers and students will be the primary concern.

IT’S COMING—New teacher training in the Rockdale ISD is scheduled to begin Aug, 4, in three and one-half weeks.

First day of classes is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 13.
