Students at Rockdale Junior High returned from winter break to an exciting surprise: the grand opening of their brand-new cafeteria. The updated facility, which began construction in March 2024, officially opened its doors on Wednesday, January 8th, marking a new chapter in the school’s dining experience.
The new cafeteria boasts a variety of enhancements designed to improve both functionality and student experience. The space features two distinct serving lines: one for “Ballpark Classics” like chicken sandwiches and pizza, and another offering “Taco Street Nachos” and daily rotating main dishes.
One of the most significant updates is the cafeteria’s now fully level floor. Previously, a large square area descended a level, creating accessibility challenges for individuals with disabilities. The new design not only addresses these challenges but also creates a larger, more open seating area. New tables and flexible arrangements have been added, allowing for better accommodations and fostering a greater sense of community among students.
The kitchen has also undergone a complete transformation, featuring state-of-the-art equipment, including ovens, steamers, a tilt skillet, a freezer, and a walk-in cooler. The serving line is now more than twice its previous size, with builtin self-service equipment, enabling students to enjoy more options while significantly reducing wait times.
Child Nutrition General Manager Erin Lopez shared her excitement about the upgrades, stating, “All of our equipment is brand new! The equipment cooks more evenly and keeps food fresh for longer. The increased space allows us to offer more options to students and speed up service, giving them more time to enjoy yummy goodness coming from our kitchen.”
Despite challenges during construction, such as transporting meals from the high school to Rockdale Junior High, the kitchen staff rose to the occasion. Principal Cheyenne Babb praised the cafeteria team’s resilience and f lexibility during the construction period, saying, “These hard-working ladies went above and beyond to ensure students received fresh, hot meals daily. While we served through makeshift lines, the team’s dedication made sure everything ran smoothly, and our students were well-fed.”
To celebrate the new space, Rockdale Junior High is hosting a special lunch event on January 29 in honor of the Chinese New Year. Families will be invited to enjoy a meal in the new cafeteria and take part in the festivities. The cost of the meal will be $7 per person, with more details to follow.
