Rockdale Junior High has had a great start. Band, athletics, student council, cheer, volleyball, and football are in full swing. I want to share some exciting learning that is happening on this campus.
In seventh grade English Enrichment Wednesdays, students are creating a school newspaper where they will share information about sports, clubs, band, bus, teacher and staff of the month, and have interview sections in the paper. In sixth grade English, students are working on Reading Passion projects. They are representing a novel they are reading in a creative way. Some students are making posters, some are making 3D models of their story and some are creating maps of all the locations in the story.
All science classes have been busy with labs. In 8th grade science, students have just completed an edible cell lab where they made a cell and all of its organelles (parts) out of jello and candy. In seventh grade Science Enrichment Wednesdays, students got to sample and look at their own cheek cells under the microscope.
Students will have a Human Body unit where they will look at how muscles and bones work together in a chicken wing, and will create a life-size person that describes all of the organ systems.
In eighth grade Science Enrichment Wednesdays, students started with forensic science. Students have been learning how to collect, utilize and properly document evidence. Students will conduct pickle “autopsies” this upcoming week to teach proper dissection techniques.
In sixth grade, students are busy with a coin lab, Gummy Bear Molecule Lab (practice elements and atoms by creating molecules), and Chemical Reactions Lab (mix substances to see if they produce a chemical reaction). In sixth grade Enrichment Wednesdays, students are building Crash Cars and building bird’s nests.
In Art, students are working hard creating works of art such as an Acrostic Poem with positive worlds and illustrations, a Bio Poem where students highlight their biographical information. Students then get to personalize their poem with illustrations and designs.
