Body

In October she had been hit by a vehicle and was facing a lifetime crippled or likely being put down.

But generous Rockdale came to the rescue and on Friday, “Ginger the Miracle Dog,” tail wagging and perfectly healthy, departed for a forever home in the country.

Where two companion dogs and a donkey were waiting to become buddies.

Milano-area resident Anthony Fritz adopted Ginger, ending a five-month quest by Rockdale Pet Adoption Welfare Service (PAWS).

In October the approximately 18-month-old mixed breed, crippled and dragging a mangled leg ended up at the Rockdale Animal Shelter.

A veterinarian said a $1,200 surgery was needed to fix the leg, even as Ginger remained happy and charmed everyone in sight.

She was profiled in The Reporter.

And, astonishingly the community came up with the $1,200. Ginger got her surgery.

She reacted spectacularly. After literally learning to walk again, and in no pain, she became a bouncy, lively, happy resident of PAWS downtown headquarters at 215 North Main, cared for by PAWS volunteers.

Only one goal remained. Ginger needed a home.

She has been featured twice in The Reporter and on the PAWS Facebook page.

Fritz got in touch with PAWS, found out about Ginger and on Friday he came to downtown Rockdale and made one waggy dog, and several PAWS volunteers, very happy.

PAWS notes that there are more “Gingers” available, many not with such a dramatic story but with just as much need of a home.

Currently the animal shelter, which was built for 12, has over 20 residents.

There are a handful more downtown.

Donations may also be sent to PAWS at PO Box 1453, Rockdale, TX, 76567.

There’s a sliding scale of fees to adopt dogs, depending upon how much veterinary work has been performed to assure they are healthy.
