AUSTIN—A Rockdale barbecue restaurant is in the “final four” of a Texas Monthly readers poll to determine the state’s best.

It’s impressive enough that Brett’s Backyard Barbecue is in the semifinal balloting. But look at the names of the other three remaining:

Franklin Barbecue in Austin, Kreuz of Lockhart and Snow’s in Lexington.

That’s pretty much Texas Barbecue Olympus.

The semifinal matches pit—no, not that kind of pit—Brett’s against Franklin’s and Kreuz against Snow’s.

Balloting was to have closed at noon Tuesday.

The two winners will meat—uh, that’s “meet”—for the title.

The Texas Monthly poll was structured like the college basketball bracket which determines the NCAA national champion, with a 32-team bracket, 16 on each side.

Brett’s has won three rounds of head-t0-head balloting, advancing by defeating Micklethwait Quality Meats of Austin, Heim’s of Fort Worth and Valentina’s of Austin.

Both Franklin’s and Snow’s have been termed the “Best Barbecue in Texas” in previous years by Texas Monthly.

Such titans of “Texas Que” as Louie Mueller’s of Taylor and Cooper’s of Llano have already been eliminated, both by teams on the other side of the bracket from Brett’s.

Snow’s defeated Louie Mueller’s and Cooper’s fell to Kreuz in the quarterfinals, according to Texas Monthly readers.

In April, Brett’s was named one of the top 25 new barbecue joints in Texas by the magazine.—M.B.
