Rockdale City Council members voted to take $650,000 out of reserve funds, money that will be returned to the reserve fund once the city receives already approved grant money, to fund three big water-related issues.

The city will take bids to have a clay line replaced on property near Beverly Drive and CR 487 where a sewer line is leaking. The cost is projected at $150,000.

Money was also approved to bring more capacity to a lift station to serve the planned expansion of Las Robles Manufactured Park. The council members appropriated $300,000 for the upgrade.

The city also plans to replace the old cast iron water pipes in the Cameron Avenue right of way which is state property with new pipe placed nearer downtown buildings in the city right of way. These lines will be in the city right of way and the expected cost is $200,000.

The Rockdale City Council also gave Police Chief Jerry Meadors permission to use a Code Red emergency system that is free to use as an alternative to the old siren system that is costly to operate.

Meadors said the county has been using the system for years with great effect.

The system is easy to use one can simply download a Code Red app or go to http://www.milamcounty.net/page/milam.em.codered and click on the city of Rockdale link and fill out a form to get the emergency warnings via text or email or both.

Meadors said this could amount to a significant savings for the city in using the free service.
