Rockdale skipped fall and went straight from summer to winter Sunday.
A wet cold front whipped through Central Texas Saturday with 5-inches-and-counting in rainfall, sending temperatures plummeting and triggering at least a half-dozen sizable power outages throughout town.
The temperature dropped more than 40 degrees, from a high of 90 on Saturday to a 49-degree low Sunday morning.
MOVED—One of those outages forced the relocation of the annual Rock-dale Fair Queen Pageant from the high school auditorium to the junior-high commons.
The Fair children’s pageant had just been completed Saturday morning at RHS when a loud “crack” was heard and the power went off.
Pageant organizers moved the event to the junior-high, which still had power.
Actually, power was restored later that afternoon but the pageant was held in the commons.
The weather had one more surprise in store for the pageant. The reigning Miss Texas, Madison Fuller, was unable to get to the pageant for her mistress of ceremonies duties.
“Pinch hitter” was Caitlin Garcia, Miss Rockdale Fair Queen 2017.
DARK—But the power problems were far from over. Portions of northwest Rockdale continued to endure periodic outages through Tuesday.
An Oncor spokesman told The Reporter Tuesday the outages were caused by rain-laden tree limbs sagging onto power lines.
RAIN—Heaviest rain was Monday with just short of three inches reported in KRXT-FM’s official rain gauge. Wednesday morning, FM 908 at Brushy Creek, FM 487 at the San Gabriel River and some Thorndale-area county roads remained closed.
