Team Alex has lost its captain.
Alex Sandoval, the 11-year-old girl whose fight with a rare brain cancer inspired hope and the will to battle in the hearts of citizens of Rockdale, died Monday.
“It’s with broken hearts that Andy and I tell you all that this morning at 9:30, Alex lost her fight. We want to thank you all for the amazing support!” her mother, Terri York Sandoval, wrote on Facebook. “Alex loved the attention and felt the love. Right now we are just needing time to process this and be with our other two kiddos.”
Alex, the girl who loved tie-dye, had the community’s will and support behind her in her struggle with the cancer that doctors told the family in January was inoperable and incurable.
But hope lived in her mother’s faith.
“I know and hear what the doctors are saying about her and they are brilliant at what they do, but in this journey I have found faith that I didn’t know I had. God tells me this isn’t the end of her story,” York-Sandoval said after the diagnosis.
That feeling was shared throughout the town with fundraisers held, people wearing tie-dye T-shirts and schools holding tie-dye days earlier this year.
Another fundraiser is planned to help pay for medical expenses.
The event is currently set for June 26 at the Rockdale VFW Post 6525 on US 79, starting at 10 a.m.
Words of sympathy flooded York-Sandoval’s Facebook page following her announcement of Alex’s death.
“I am so sorry to hear this, she was a very brave little girl and will always be remembered. I am so sorry for y’all’s loss and my thoughts and prayers are with you all,” was one of the many comments offered to the Sandovals.
