Rockdale High School has received a major award, ranking high enough to be listed as a “Best High School” in the 2019 national rankings of U.S. News & World Report.

RHS will now be able to display the U.S. News Best High Schools award badge.

The announcement was made Monday by RISD Supt. Dr. Denise Monzingo.

According to the magazine, Rockdale High was ranked 509th among Texas High Schools and 6,286th among U. S. high schools.

There are approximately 7,800 high schools in Texas and 17,000 in the United States, including charter and magnet schools

CRITERIA—Robert Morse, US News spokesman, said criteria used in the ranking include enrollment, graduation rates, student body, location, school type and results of state assessments as well as advanced placement results.

Morse said the 2019 rankings are based on a more in-depth analysis than in the past.

U.S. News does not just collect data directly from the high schools,” He said. “All data comes directly from official third-party sources, such as the U. S. Dept.of Education Common Core of Data.

He said only the top 40 percent of schools earned the eligibility to display the “Best” badges.

RHS—US News data lists RHS with an enrollment of 426 and 36 teachers.

The campus has a 54 percent minority enrollment and 58 percent are listed as economically disadvantaged.

In addition to the 6,226th overall national ranking, Rockdale High School is ranked 3,383rd (tie) in graduation, 4,748th in college readiness, 6,7o4th (tie) in college curriculum breadth index, 10,738th in math and reading performance and 10,752nd in math and reading profi ciency.

Rockdale, 509, state; 6,286, national.

• Cameron 1,166 state; 12,893, national.

• Thorndale, 705, state; 8,340, national.

No ratings were listed for Milano or Buckholts.
