At the RISD school board meeting on Monday night, the Milam County Health Department was recognized by Rockdale ISD for “Stand Up for Texas Public Schools” Recognition Program.
Robert Kirkpatrick accepted the award for the Health Department for the 2020-2021 TASB Business Recognition Program. The Milam County Health Department was noted for being a valuable partner for Rockdale ISD to maintain a safe environment for students and staff by providing support and advice as well as testing and vaccination services.
Rockdale ISD Food Service Department was identified as one of the schools in Texas to complete the Texas Department of Agriculture 2021 Spring Farm Fresh Challenge.
The board authorized the issuance of RISD Unlimited Tax Refunding Bonds, Series 2021; setting certain parameters for the bonds. The transaction does not add any years to the debt, it is a refinance to save the district money.
The board voted to retain the law firm of Sara Leon & Associates PLLC and financial consultant, Jigsaw School Finance Solutions, LLC to assist the district in the review and processing of the Application for Value Limitation Agreement pursuant to Chapter 313 of the Texas Property Tax Code. The Chapter 313 is a “cousin” of the tax-abatement going on with the county involving the American Glove Company, but the 313 is just for school districts.
Each of the principals reviewed the Campus Plan Performance Objectives for 2021-22. Rockdale Elementary is working on identifying areas of students growth and needs for improvement along with training staff to provide intervention. Rockdale Intermediate identified growth targets for all core content areas and strategies to support teachers as they work to meet those targets. Rockdale Junior High will focus on academics, building relationships, and communication. Rockdale High School will push advanced academic students to meet higher expectations while providing intervention support for the students who need that. All campuses have identified communication as a vital component of school success.
The back-to-school update and report was presented by Dr. Monzingo. She gave the board an update on student enrollment, fall athletic participation and band participation. She highlighted the cross country program where numbers have grown significantly. Dr. Monzingo also provided a maintenance update on completed projects up to this point of the year.
Dr. Dell Giles reported on TELPAS scores and an action plan to accelerate English language acquisition for emergent bilingual students. The action plan will be implemented in Grades 2-12 using online support as well as a face-to-face teaching program and small group intervention.
Kathy Pelzel presented the report of early childhood and CCMR goals. Targeted professional development has been planned to support teachers and students to meet these goals, including Reading Academies for K-3 teachers. The CCMR goals focus on preparing students to meet college and career readiness levels, including TSI preparation and certification programs.
