A month of Earth Day activities reaches its climax with two days of projects Friday and Saturday, focusing on a citywide cleanup effort by scores of volunteers.

Most of the on-the-street action is Friday, but there will be a full day of fun and education Saturday downtown by the El Camino Real chapter of Texas Master Naturalists.

Actually, the first event of Rock-dale’s “Earth Month” cleanup was Saturday when the city hosted its annual spring Stash Your Trash at Fair Park.

PROJECTS—The big weekend kicks off at 8:30 a.m. in the Rock-dale High School gym when the Emmaus Project serves breakfast tacos to participating teams in the RHS Gym, followed by a send-off at 9.

Teams from organizations, churches, student groups, along with individuals, will fan out through the city to various locations for cleaning and restoration.

Student groups involved include Rotary Interact, Student Council, National Honor Society, PALs, RHS Spanish Club and Spanish National Honor Society.

Also, the Emmaus Project will clean up a stretch of roadway along East Belton Avenue.

RECYCLING—There’s a big emphasis on recycling in a couple of ways.

Steve Shannon of Progressive Waste Solutions will address elementary and intermediate school students twice Friday on the topic of recycling.

He will be on the elementary campus at 10:20 a.m., to meet with second graders, and at the intermediate school at 2 p.m.

And all week, starting Monday, persons recycling aluminum cans at Rockdale Iron & Metal Recycling, 1263 US 79, will be reimbursed at an enhanced rate.

The enhanced rate will be 50 cents per pound, up from the current rate of 40.

That offer ends Friday, April 27.

NATURALISTS—El Camino Real chapter of Master Naturalists will offer information and free take-home items from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at The Community Room, 109 North Main.

Information will be featured on bee, bat, bird and butterfly pollinators, trees, water conservation, recycling and more.

There will be craft activities and face painting for children and author Sean Wall will discuss his book on edible plants.

Also that day, just down the street, Rockdale Girl Scout Troops 9603 and 9605, along with Jack and Beth Brooks, will clean up the Old City Cemetery, and its adjacent cemeteries.

VOLUNTEERS—Dave Melton, Earth Day organizer, said volunteers are still needed and are welcome to participate.

Those interested are asked to come to the RHS Gym at 8:30 a.m. Friday.
