Rockdale City Planner Ben Blanchard gave a report on city growth to the Rockdale MDD (RMDD) Board on Monday night stating that the Cornerstone Subdivision has 51 new building permits approved for continued housing there. He was not able to reveal two new areas of growth that are in the planning stages, but said exciting announcements would be coming soon. The new Republic Ridge Subdivision on Texas Street should start construction in March on 234 more single family homes and townhomes.
John Marshall, formerly the manager of Cardinal Roofing, which is now closed in Rockdale, is starting a new roofing business in town and will be leasing the former Hodge Podge Etc. building on East US 79. He appeared the Monday night’s meeting to ask for a facade grant from the MDD board for $20,000, but some of the things the building needs are not part of the facade grant program. The board agreed to split a $15,000 grant for the work.
RMDD Economic Director Jim Gibson brought up a Growth Strategies topic for the board members and it was decided that Rockdale’s growth must be a group project that includes the RMDD as well as officials from the city, county and school to assure that all are on the same page as how to proceed and manage the growth that is coming. A meeting with all of these groups will be held in the future.
A total of $120,900 in budget amendments were added to this fiscal year’s budget that had already been approved for previous years but haven’t happened yet. A large chunk of that total addresses new sidewalks for downtown that were not part of the TxDOT project.
