A spark from a welder’s torch accidentally set off a blaze that then burned more than 150 acres just outside of Rockdale between County Roads 334 and 326 on Thursday afternoon, according to Rockdale VFD Chief Ward Roddam.

No one was injured in the blaze that threatened, but did not burn, six structures including homes and barns near the fire.

Rockdale volunteers were joined in the fire fight by units from Milano, Cameron, Tanglewood and Black Jack to get the fast-spreading fire under control.

Texas A&M’s Forestry Service provided two bulldozers and Milam County Emergency Management was on the scene as were Milam County Sheriff’s deputies, DPS troopers and AMR, Ward said.

“The fire was accidentally started by a landowner doing some welding on a gate,” Roddam said. “This was a very dangerous fire that consumed a lot of vegetation very quickly.”
