The Republican Women of Milam County (RWMC) held their annual Independence Dinner and Program on Friday night at 6 p.m. at the Milam County Youth Expo Building in Cameron. About 250 were present for the speakers, auction and a prime rib dinner from Kostroun Catering.
The program featured Republicans running for office in primaries in Milam County and beyond with former Governor of Texas, Rick Perry, as the keynote speaker.
Both a silent and a live auction was led by auctioneer Buddy Johnson which raised $4,100 for RWMC which will be used for things like Constitutional Packages which they provide for every fourth grader in Milam County, including homeschoolers, to help teachers explain the importance of the U.S. Constitution.
The group also supports non-profits like Brown Santa and the Milam County Child Protective Services. They provide scholarships for Milam County seniors by donating to the Christine Holcombe Mardi Gras Bash which is this Saturday.
Warren Matous, Milam County Republican Chairman introduced the candidates who were Lesli R. Fitzpatrick, who is running for Justice in the 3rd Court of Appeals, Place 4; Wyatt Dude Ferris, Douglas Baker and James Denman, who are running for County Commissioner in Precinct 2; Wesley Payne and Johnny Andrews, who are vying for County Commissioner in Precinct 4; Steve Young and Bill Whitmire, who are running for Milam County Judge; Trey Rutledge, Jez Benzer, Stan Gerdes, Tom Glass and Paul Pape, who are running for State Representative in District 17; and Rob Rosenberger, Jason “Stormchaser” Nelson, Paulette Carson and Pete Sessions, who are running for U.S. Representative in District 17.
President of RWMC Donelle Keen-Tomascik gave the welcome address followed by the Posting of Colors and the Pledge of Allegiance by American Legion Post 9.
Rick Perry’s speech was well-received and mostly self-deprecating humor about himself and his failed bid for president in 2016 and his disastrous debate performances that year.

The Republican Women of Milam County organization does not endorse any primary candidates, but will support candidates after the primaries are over.
