Last week The Reporter took you through the first week’s sesquicentennial events which begin today on July 4. The second week of events start on Friday, July 12 at the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library at 9 a.m. and sponsored by the Rockdale Historical Society.
The El Camino Real de los Tejas Traveling Exhibit will be on display sponsored by the Milam County Historical Commission. Also enjoy Books-to-Big Screen Movies of the Eras Exhibit along with author signings brought to you by Main Street Bookshop. Authors that day will include Nathan Bryan, Susan Cole, Tamara Powell, Shari Seifert, Kristie Self and Martha Wells.
At 7 p.m. Friday night (June 12) enjoy the Fallback Plan Concert presented by and at the Kay Theater. Local rock band The Fallback Plan presents a southern punk rock performance. The band was established in 2020 by frontman and lead guitarist Luke Garrison. Doors open at 6 p.m.
On Saturday, July 13 at 9 a.m. see Dr. Paul Crump as he presents Rare Reptiles and Amphibians of Milam County at the I&GN Depot followed from 11 a.m. to noon by a Railroad Historical Talk.
Also on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. there will be a Heritage Celebration at The 1895 presented by Vision Historic Preservation Foundation. There will be a Historic Mural and Essay Exhibit and live music all day long. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. enjoy a Historic Downtown Walking Tour, tours of The 1895, lots of kids’ activities including yard games, sidewalk chalk and face painting from 10 a.m. to noon by Girl Scout Troop 12345. As always, t he Ro ckd a le Rotary Club will provide a misting tent cooling station at this event and many others.
For the walking ing tours you’ll pick up a History Passport which will be stamped by docents at six downtown historical spots. The turn your passport in at Main Street Bookshop for a chance to win prizes.
Saturday, July 13, is also the day of the big Rockdale Birthday Party Dinner and Dance at the KC Hall from 6 to 11 p.m. featuring Kenny ny Orts. The menu includes charcuterie and fruit appetizer, carved roasted pork loin, jalapeno creamed corn, fresh spring salad, rolls, tea and a variety of cakes for dessert. There will also be a cash bar. Tickets are $75 and all proceeds benefi t the Rockdale Sesquicentennial to make this event possible as well as support the
community non-profits producing the sesquicentennial celebration events. Tickets available at https://www.

Wind down on Sunday with a classic film on Sunday, July 14 at 3 p.m. for a showing of The Wizard of Oz.
Also on Sunday enjoy the Community Birthday Party Picnic at Veterans Park from 5 to 9 p.m. There will be free pool admission, a dunk tank, waterslide and birthday cupcakes courtesy of the City of Rockdale. At 6 p.m. the Communities in Concert Band will perform Sousapolkapalooza, a concert of polkas and music by John Phillip Sousa.
At 7:30 p.m. the 2024 time capsule will be buried at the park.
