The Milam and Burleson Counties Groundwater Summit is quickly approaching.

This event has been set for Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. “All are welcome to attend,” Doug Box, spokesman for the Post Oak Savanna Groundwater Conservation Distinct, said.

Box said the summit is free and open to the public with lunch provided. and will be held at the Caldwell Civic Center at 103 Texas 21 in Caldwell.

VISTA RIDGE PANEL—With the new Vista Ridge Project due to begin production during 2020, a panel will discuss the projected impacts this production will have on the aquifers of the district using the new Groundwater Availability Model.

“The panel will also explore when and how the district’s rules, which protect water levels in these aquifers, may come into play and be applied.

Lois Kolkhorst, Texas State Senator, is the lunchtime Keynote speaker.

Kolkhorst, a resident of Brenham, represents District 18, which includes Burleson County. She had formerly represented a district which includes Milam County.

Box said she will discuss issues from this past legislative session affecting her senate district, as well as topics of continuing and future concerns, including property rights and groundwater.

CAMPAIGN—“We will also kick off our Free Water Quality Sampling Campaign at this year’s summit.,” Box said.

He said participants can get their well water tested without charge.

“To participate, pick up your sampling packet at the summit or at the AgriLife Extension offices in either Burleson or Milam Counties between Aug 12 and 14.

Samples must be dropped off Aug 15 between 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Burleson or Milam County AgriLife Extension Offices.

“Make sure you collect the sample the same day that you drop it off. Easy to follow instructions will be provided,” Box said.

Post Oak Savannah GCD is sponsoring this campaign in partnership with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension offices in Burleson and Milam Counties, as well as the Texas Water Resource Institute and Texas Well Owner’s Network.

“This water test is a $65 value,” he said.

POSGCD— Box said the mission of the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District is to “strategically manage the groundwater resources of Burleson and Milam counties in order to protect against aquifer depletion and pollution and to ensure an adequate water supply for future generations.”

It collects data, monitors groundwater levels, regulating excessive production, permitting, educating the public and coordinates with neighboring districts.
