A memorial service for one of the longest-serving public officials in the history of Milam County is set for 11 a.m. Thursday at Milam County Cowboy Church.
Twila Harris died Saturday at Baylor Scott & White Hospital after a long illness.
Rockdale resident Harris, wife of Rockdale Police Chief Thomas Harris, was a justice of the peace for more than a quarter century.
She was appointed Justice of the Peace in 1985, following the death of another longtime Rock-dale J-P, Leonard Allen.
Harris, a Democrat, was elected to a full-term in 1986, then re-elected in 1988, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2004 and 2006, mostly without opposition.
She also had served as president of the Justice of the Peace and Constables Association.
See obituary for Harris on page 4D.
City Hall and the City Library will be closed Thursday for the memorial service, according to Rockdale City Manager Chris Whittaker.
