Milam County has recorded its second death in two weeks—the seventh overall—attributed to the COVID-19 virus.
Twenty-one new cases of the virus were reported during the past seven days, measured Wednesday morning through Wednesday morning (Reporter presstime) and Milam surpassed the 500 plateau early this week.
Even so, it took the county four weeks to add another 100 to its total, the slowest gain of 100 since the early days of the pandemic.
‘ATTACK ANYBODY’—County Judge Steve said Monday he was advised of a seventh death, a “senior male resident” of the 76520 (Cameron and area) zip code.
“Yes, our cases have slowed down and that’s encouraging,” Young said. “But this should be a reminder this virus is still here and it can attack anyone.”
Since the first statistics were released, the Camzip code has been far and away the leader eron-area of COVID-19 cases, accounting for almost half of them.
Last figures released by the Milam County Health Department indicated 49 percent of Milam cases were in that zip code, compared to 29 percent in Rockdale’s 76567 and 22 percent in all other zip codes combined.
Young, who has repeatedly urged Milam residents to wear masks and practice social distancing, reported Monday.
RATE SLOWS—The 21 new COVID-19 cases reported, brings the cumulative total to 509.
However, the week still marked the slowest route for the county to add 100 cases to its total since the first 100 were logged in early July stretching back to the first cases in March.
The county surpassed 400 cases the week end-ing Aug. 6—again measured Wednesday to Wednesday— meaning it took four weeks for the total to grow by 100 new cases.
Milam went from 300 to 400 in three weeks and it took only two weeks each to grow from 200 to 300 and 100 to 200.
The first 100, in the pandemic’s early days, were logged between March 26 and July 9, a total of 16 weeks.
