Susie Sansom-Piper came home for the final time Saturday. The renowned author, lecturer, historian and well-loved Rock-dale celebrity was escorted to her grave in Oak Lawn Cemetery by a horse-drawn carriage-hearse, following a ceremony at St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Austin, which was attended by hundreds including many Rockdale residents and graduates at Aycock High School. Mrs. Piper died Oct. 21 in Austin at age 98. She had authored 42 Black History Month series for The Reporter. Here, pall bearers wait to remove Mrs. Piper from the carriage.
