12 hopefuls seek congressional seat

With the deadline to file for the March 3, 2020, primary elections looming Monday the two-man race in the Republican nomination for sheriff has turned into a three-man contest.

Former two-term Precinct 3 Constable Herbie Vaughn filed during the past week, according to GOP County Chair Bill Whitmire.

Through the weekend 12 candidates—eight Republic ans and four Democrats—filed to succeed incumbent Republican Bill Flores, who is not seeking re-election.

MILAM—Vaughn, who also ran for sheriff in 2012, joins the sheriff’s race that includes incumbent Chris White and Craig Wise.

Also filing with Whitmire during the week was Pat Guffey for Pct. 1 Constable. He joins James Pratt in seeking the position currently held by John Anderle.

Prosecutor Bill Torrey is challenged by Lonnie Gosch.

Precinct 1 Commissioner Richard “Opey” Watkins has drawn challengers in Ricky McCall and Henry Hubnik.

Frank Summers and Charles Truitt filed for the Precinct 3 Commissioner position. Incumbent John Fisher is not seeking re-election.

Others filing in the GOP Primary are:

• John Youngblood (incumbent), 20th District Judge.

• Sherry Mueck (incumbent), tax assessor-collector.

• James Pratt, constable, Precinct 1.

• Charlie West (incumbent), constable, Precinct 2.

• Jay Beathard (incumbent) constable, Precinct 3.

• Michael Moehling (incumbent currently serving as a Democrat), constable, Precinct 4.

The Reporter has not received any report of Democratic candidates filing for county offices.

CONGRESS—Flores, a Republican is serving his fifth term as U. S. Representative from District 17.

His retirement announcement triggered mass filing to replace him, including a former GOP congressman who was defeated for re-election one year ago.

That is Pete Sessions, an 11-term congressman who was seeking another term in District 32, but was defeated in November 2018 by Democrat Collin Allred.

Also seeing the GOP nomination are Rene Swann, Scott Bland, Ahmad Adnan, George Hindman, Kristen Alamo Rowen, Trent Sutton and Todd Kent.

Democratic candidates are William Foster III, David Jaramillo and Rick Kennedy.

Kennedy was the unsuccessful Democratic candidate in 2018, losing to Flores.

PRIMARIES—Final day to register to vote before the March 3 election is Feb. 3. Early voting begins Feb. 18 and ends Feb. 28.
