Milam County Sheriff Chris White will seek a new term next year.
It would be the first full term for White, who was appointed sheriff after the death of David Greene in 2018.
White, a Republican, formally announced his candidacy Tuesday and said he will file in the 2020 GOP Primary.
CHIEF DEPUTY—
White, who has served 20 years in law enforcement, the last 17 in Milam County, was a longtime chief deputy under Greene.
He was serving in that capacity when Sheriff Greene sustained a heart attack in July 2018, while on vacation in Oregon.
Greene died July 20.
Four days later, Milam County commissioners appointed White as interim sheriff to serve until an election could be held to fill the remainder of Green’s elected term, which stretches through the end of 2020.
White was nominated for the post by the Milam County Republican Party. Milam County Democrats did not name a candidate for sheriff and White ran unopposed in the November general election, drawing 6,538 votes.
In addition to electing a sheriff, next year Milam County voters will also choose a district judge, county/district attorney, tax collector, Precincts 1 and 3 commissioners and all four constables. Filing begins Nov. 9.
