Every day is about to become Wednesday in some sections of Rockdale.
That would be “Hump day.”
City Manager Chris Whittaker said over the next several weeks the city will install “speed humps” on streets bordering two of Rockdale’s most heavily used parks to protect the children, and families, who use those facilities.
Drivers are cautioned to get ready for the humps—which are designed to slow traffic—since they are going up on two of the city’s major thoroughfares, Murray Avenue and MLK Boulevard.
Whittaker said two of the humps will be installed on Murray between Brazos and Post Oak to slow traffic by the Veterans Park pavilion.
“We will install two others on MLK by Fourth Street adjacent to Sumuel Park,” Whittaker said.
He said the humps will be multicolored black and safety yellow with reflectors.“We have coordinated this with first responders and the Rockdale ISD to ensure we don’t prohibit first responders or the bus system for our schools,” he said.
What’s the difference between a “speed hump” and a “speed bump?”
“Speed bumps are generally used to slow traffic all the way down to 2-5 miles per hour for areas like parking lots, crosswalks or other walking areas,” he said. “Speed humps are general wider than speed bumps and are designed to slow traffic to 10-20 miles per hour.”
He said warning signs will indicate a motorist is approaching a speed hump.
