Value of stolen checks total $300,000, sheriff says

A 27-year-old Milano resident was arrested last Tuesday and charged with mail theft and fraudulent use of identifying information after the Milam County Sheriff’s Department received a tip.

Justin Lee Dement is being held in the Milam County Jail in lieu of $121,000 bond.

Sheriff Chris White said the suspect possessed mail believed to have been stolen from numerous locations throughout Milam, Burleson and Brazos Counties.

“Credit card information, personal checks, toys, letters and other various forms of mail were seized by the sheriff’s department,” White said.

CHARGS—As of Tuesday, Dement was facing the following charges, according to the sheriff’s jail log:

• Theft of property, less than $300,000; theft of property, $2,500 to $30,000; theft of property, $7,500 to $2,500, two counts; theft of property, $100 to $750, enhanced.

• Fraudulent use possession of identifying information less than five items two counts; fraudulent use/ possession of identifying information five to 4 items1

PLEA—White said Deputy John Paniagua Jr. was instrumental in the investigation which led to the recovery of numerous checks totaling about $300,000.

“Sgt. Sam Ferguson and Sgt. John Vargas have reached out to numerous persons about the recovery of their property and mail,” White said.

“If you are a resident of Milam County and believe you may have had your mail stolen over the past few weeks, please leave a message for Sgt. Ferguson and Sgt. Vargas to follow up,” White said.
