A three-prong project that has been in the works for close to two years may be finally on its way to Milam County.
An article by the news organization Reuters reported that Samsung C&T is considering investing $673 million in building solar power plants in northwest Milam County with commercial production possibly starting in December 2023.
This announcement is in concert with last week’s report that the county is hoping for three other solar project plants around other parts of the county that would bring in an investment of $800 million, lifting the possible solar investment total to $1,473,000,000 in the county.
Milam County Judge Steve Young was happy with the news and he said that it could be the long-planned project is finally going to be a reality.
“I feel the Samsung deal is going to happen,” Young said.
He said Samsung must have a deal for potential buyers of the energy the solar farms would produce in the northern section of the county.
The Rockdale Reporter contacted C&T via email, but did not hear back by press time.
Reuters quoted an official with C&T saying his company is “proceeding approval procedures with the state.”
The school districts of Cameron, Buckholtz and Rosebud-Lott all got OKs from the state comptroller’s office on their tax incentive program requests to lure the Samsung project in December of 2020.
On Oct. 15, 2019, the commissioners court approved an abatement for Ben Milam Solar Projects 1, 2 and 3 as recommended by the Milam County Industrial Corporation and subject to the consummation of an actual written agreement with Ben Milam Solar.
Those project leases for Ben Milam Solar were later bought by Samsung Corporation.
