On Friday at 5 p.m. the city council passed an ordinance for ordering and establishing a special election to fill a vacancy for a West Ward council member.

In the State of Texas constitution, if a council member who files to run for mayor with more than one year and 30 days left in their term, a special election is held to fill the remaining portion of the term. The is called “resign to run.”

In this case, Brett Boren filed to run for mayor and still has two years remaining on his term. There are three people who have filed for a different position on the West Ward which is being vacated by Belinda Hillhouse.

So what happens next? On Monday filing began to fill Boren’s remaining term. Brad Caffey withdrew his west ward filing and filed for Boren’s remaining term. The cutoff for filing for Boren’s remaining term is Monday, March 7 by 5 p.m.

Boren will “holdover” his position until after the voting on May 7, and the winner will take over the position in June.
