The Texas Historical Commission has recognized St. John’s United Methodist Church as a significant part of Texas history by awarding a Texas Historical Marker. A dedication ceremony to commemorate the event will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at the church.

Special dignitaries include Bishop of the Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church Cynthia Ferro Harvey and District Superintendent Rev. Kip Gilts.

The church was founded in Rockdale 150 years ago when the town was settled. The Methodists moved to a frame building in 1883 which also served as one of the first schools in Rockdale. The current building was dedicated in 1960 and the steeple was built to accommodate the bell from the original building.
