St. John’s United Methodist Church has a new pastor, Curtis Matthys. He will succeed Rev. John Seaton who is now serving a church in Montgomery.

Rev. Curtis Matthys is a lifelong United Methodist who served in leadership roles at his local church and district before going into ministry. Curtis has a deep heart for God and God’s people. He lives out his calling each and every day.

Curtis was born and raised in Pasadena, Texas. He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann. They have been married 45 years. They have two adult children. Amanda is a School Counselor at Seabrook Intermediate at Clear Lake and Michael is a CPA and partner at Deloitte Accounting Firm in downtown Houston. Curtis and Mary Ann have one granddaughter, Chloe, who is the delight of their lives.

In 2007, Curtis received his call to ministry while attending a men’s retreat at Lakeview. He left a career as a financial planner to devote his life to ministry as a United Methodist Pastor. Curtis attended Perkins School of Theology at SMU, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He has served churches in Palestine, Pasadena, Sealy, Port Neches, and Buffalo, Texas. He meets people where they are, prays for them daily, and nurtures their faith through meaningful worship, spiritual formation, and ministry together as a community.

Curtis is passionate about making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. He does this through his work at food pantries, nursing homes, Mother’s Day out programs, hurricane relief, mission trips, city-wide Easter celebrations and breakfast gatherings at local restaurants.
