St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Rockdale welcomes Rev. Michele C. Bonner as its new vicar.
Rev. Michele C. Bonner was born and raised in a Roman Catholic family in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She described herself as “a nerdy kid who loved to study and go to church”.
She graduated from Portsmouth High School, and studied Finance, Computer Science and Spanish at Western New England College in Springfield, MA. She graduated from Franklin Pierce College in Rindge, NH with a bachelor of science degree in computer science and b u s i n e s s management.
S h e m o v e d t o Austin in 1992 to work in the tech industry. She continues to work full time for the City of Austin in the IT Department at Austin Energy as the configuration management lead, focusing on policy and process design, re-engineering, and maintenance.
Rev. Bonner was received into the Episcopal Church on Nov. 8, 1992 by Bishop Bena vides.
“As Christians, we try to live Jesus’ commandment to love others as Jesus loves us. We approach life and people without judgment as much as possible. We try to see and treat everyone as a child of God,” she said.
In September, 2015 she entered the Iona School for Ministry, a program created by the Episcopal Diocese of Texas to train and ordain bi-vocational priests and deacons.
After three years of rigorous study, she was ordained a Deacon in June 2018, and a Priest in January 2019. She has been serving at St. Thomas since December 2019. She will be installed as vicar April 25.
Rev. Bonner said, “We all develop our own spiritual practices and try to make ourselves better Christians, but as Episcopalians we believe we were not meant to do this in isolation, but together.”
St. Thomas Episcopal Church is located at 302 East Davilla on the corner of Green and Davilla. They meet each Sunday at 9:30 a.m. for Spiritual Formation classes and at 11 a.m. Holy Communion.
