“There’s just not that much left to do.”

That’s the verdict from Lance Weidler, maintenance director of the Rockdale ISD, who said virtually all workers need to finish up the $5-million-plus project is “a couple of weeks of good weather.”

The new Tiger Stadium hosted its first football playoff game Friday as Iola took on Flatonia. It’s envisioned as the first of many in the new facility.

“And we will host the district track meet here next spring,” Weidler said.

ONE STEP AHEAD—

Work on the football/track side of the fence he proceeded with installation beginning on the long jump/triple jump and high jump pits, shot put and discus areas.

And, after weather delays, there has been major progress on the softball field.

“We’re staying one step ahead of the sports seasons,” Weidler said. “Yes, we are heading into the holidays but right after we come back from vacation, those spring sports are going to start up,” he added.

He noted that softball practice begins Jan. 18.

The softball field has been re-oriented and there are some other changes.

“The fences are a little closer in than the original field,” Weidler said. “But the fences are higher.”

“You’re going to have to hit the ball pretty good to get it out of there,” he added.

There’s also a high screen installed to protect traffic on Murray Avenue from batted balls.

WHAT’S NEXT?—

Weidler said while those driving by will notice a large amount of dirt surfaces around the complex, it’s actually closer to completion than would appear at first glance.

“Most of that is going to be hydro-mulched,” he said.

That’s a grass planting method in which a mixture of seed and fertilizer is sprayed onto soil.

“It’s going to go pretty fast after that,” Weidler said. “There are different kinds of grass seeds which will come up at different times.”

“We are in the home stretch now,” he added.
