Rockdale City Council swore in two council members at Monday night’s meeting. New council member Daniel Willie was sworn in to his west side seat and Esmeralda Ruelas-Olivares was sworn in to her second three-year term.

Mayor Ward Roddam was ill on Monday so he will be sworn in at the June meeting.

Two proclamations were read by mayor pro tem Lin Perry regarding the 11 RHS Bioscience students who graduated with associates degrees from Temple College. Senior Jack Luckey spoke to the council and attendees about his experience. He was joined by two other graduates, Jazalle Dunn and Alvan Liu. The other proclamation was about this week being Economic Development Week. See editorial on page 4A.

The Rockdale Historical Society asked for $10,000 in HOT funds to run the historic I&GN Depot Museum which is done each year. There had been an error with their 2024 allotment, so the council approved the money for both 2024 and 2025. Volunteer Kathleen Watson gave an update on the Depot Museum.

The Rockdale Homecoming Association and the RHS Class of 1975 asked for HOT funds together since the class reunion and homecoming are happening the same weekend. The Class of 1975 will receive $500 and the Homecoming Association will receive up to $3,000 after the hotel occupancy numbers are revealed.

Rockdale City Secretary Shanna Johnson swore in Daniel Willie for his new seat as west side city council member, while Esmeralda Ruelas-Olivares, who ran unopposed, is sworn in for her second three-year term as the city’s first Latina councilwoman. Mayor Ward Roddam, who also ran unopposed, was ill and will be sworn in at a later date. Outgoing council member, Kyle Walker, was honored for serving his term.
