The annual teachers of the year, most of them anyway, were announced May 6 at a RISD Recognition Reception in the Commons of Rockdale Junior High School. Teacher of the Year for Rockdale High School will be announced May 19.
Lorrie Birkhead, who got her degree at Sam Houston State University and is retiring this year after 33 years of teaching, said, “I love learning, sharing that love of learning with children, and hopefully making a difference in their lives. I especially love teaching first grade because you lay the foundation for many math skills and witness the children’s excitement as they learn to read.”
Mark Smith got his degree from University of Houston-Victoria. Smith, who is from New Orleans, said he enjoys, “watching the kids grow their confidence about their abilities as the year progresses.”
Julie Orton, a native of Refugio, got her degree from the University of Texas at Austin. She said, “I love working with students who are struggling, and then seeing that ‘a-ha’ moment when they finally get that difficult concept.”
