A 66-year-old local resident became the Rockdale area’s third roadway fatality in 11 days Sunday afternoon when his bicycle was in collision with a pickup just west of the Rockdale city limits.

John Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene on US 79 near the Western Hills intersection, according to State Trooper Michael McHale.

McHale said Hernandez was westbound on a bicycle in the highway median at 4:07 p.m. when he attempted to move, apparently to the westbound US 79 shoulder.

He said a westbound pickup driven by Joao Mayrinkof Round Rock was already in a westbound lane of travel.

“He tried to brake and sounded his horn, but came into contact with the bicy- cle,” McHale said.

Rockdale firefighters and the Milam County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene.

On April 8, two Rockdale women died in a two-vehicle collision on FM 487.
