Rockdale resident and percussionist Sophie Thomason has been named to the Boston Crusaders, one of the top drum-and-bugle corps in the world.
Thomason, has been a percussionist since age 10.
“It’s honestly such an incredible feeling,” said Thomason, who marched for Thorndale High School from sixth to eighth grade and Hutto High School in ninth grade “Being in a world-class drum corps is something I’ve been dreaming of since I began to drum.
“Earning membership in a top five group is something I still find unbelievable after signing my contract. It feels like a miracle, but I know that it probably has more to do with the years of literal blood, sweat and tears I’ve put into my craft,” she said.
I also owe my success to the wonderful teachers I’ve had and my parents who’ve done everything they possibly can to support this endeavor. I am overwhelmed with their love and support, Thomason said.”
The Crusaders are the third-oldest junior drum and bugle corps in the U.S. and are made up of brass players, percussionists and color guard members under 22, according to their website. They travel over 10,000 miles and perform in more than 40 competitions for a combined audience of 300,000 every summer.
They will play in Apogee Stadium in Denton July 18, and the Alamodome in San Antonio July 20.
They also compete at the Drum Corps International World Championships in Indianapolis at the RCA Dome Aug. 8-10.
She is the daughter of Lee “Sparky” and Leah Thomason of Rockdale and attended Milano and Thorn-dale schools. She also has a GoFundMe page set up to pay for room, board, transportation and fees at www.gofundme.com/gvwt3-boston-crusaders-2019-membership.
