On Oct. 19 Thorndale ISD school board voted to increase the pay for substitute teachers at its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the administration board room.
Those who sub for the district are paid according to three classifications: those with a high school diploma or GED will now get $80 per day, those with a college degree with get $90 per day and those that have a certified teacher rating with get $100 per day.
The board also added a long-term sub category which will be for teachers who assignment will last 11 days or more. Long-term assignments will draw $120 per day. The board voted 7-0 to approve the new pay scales.
Elementary Principal Michael Young said there were only about 15 asynchronous learners left on his campus which is about 5%. Scott Frei, middle school principal, said the number of asynchronous learners was around 6% on the his campus. Jennifer Parnham, high school principal, said she had around 13 asynchronous students left which is approximately 5%. She also talked to the board about the recent beginning of the year exams and how they were expectedly lower than normal at this time of year because of the school closure last spring.
Superintendent Adam Ivy said the football district executive committee had met to discuss how to handle the recent COVID based forfeit that Bruceville-Eddy had to take against Thorndale. He said that the committee voted to leave the rule as it was voted on back in August which means that forfeited games will not be made up.
Ivy told the board that the district had been considering, since August, a potential COVID based stipend for salaried employees due to the greatly increased amount of time that has been required to teach both in person and asynchronously at the same time. He told the board that he would send them proposals to consider before the next meeting.
Ivy presented the district’s asynchronous instruction plan that he had already submitted to the Texas Education Agency.
He said that TEA had given feedback and required one small change that had now been made.
The board voted 7-0 to ratify the plan.
