There was a very special pep rally held at Thorndale High School last Wednesday, and no one, other than a few administrators and the press, knew why it was being held. Everyone assumed it was for the high school boys basketball team, but they were wrong.
H-E-B supermarket has an Excellence in Education department which began in 2002 and they honor outstanding public school professionals to thank them for their dedication and commitment. And they like to give away lots of money.
Unbeknownst to her, someone nominated Thorndale Elementary School counselor Abby Jones and the pep rally was held to announce that out of the entire state of Texas, she was one of the five finalists being considered for the prize.
Jones was presented with a check for $1,000 just for being a finalist and the school received $1,500. If she is the actual winner this year, Jones will receive $10,000 personally and the school will get $15,000.
