THORNDALE—School trustees in the Thorndale ISD “gathered” recently by teleconference, a result of the COVID-19 situation.
As might be expected, the virus situation was a prime topic of discussion.
Supt. Adam Ivy said all TISD staff members have been order not to come in to work unless they “have an urgent need to do so or have been asked by their supervisor.”
Ivy gave an update on school activities, noting that all UIL events have been canceled until at least May 4.
He said grade-point averages and class rank for the Class of 2020 has been decided as of the end of the third nine weeks.
“A decision will have to be made as to how this semester will be handled with future graduating classes,” he said.
MCJLS—In a reaction to the cancellation of the Milam County Junior Livestock Show, which was to have been held over the weekend, board member Kirk Becker reported the Thorndale Ag Booster Club has decided to go head and make financial contributions to those students that qualified to help offset the costs of their animal projects.
Principals reported on the TISD’s online learning programs.
Business Manager Rebecca Peel reported on financial repercussions of the virus situation.
She said it appears the state will continue to fund schools “as expected” through this fiscal year and noted the TISD would be able to continue paying staff members so long as the funding holds up.
Peel cautioned that the district may face a shortage in its food service budget because the cafeteria won’t be creating any revenue during the school closures.
Trustees okayed a resolution to allow the superintendent to make decisions related to the sometimes quickly changing COVID-19 situation when necessary.
Board members joined other school district and municipal entities in Milam County and postponed the May 2 school board election.
In non-COVID-19 matters, Ivy reported the district’s track program is almost complete and the Middle School Gym Project has begun.
Ivy said an old clay sewer pipe under the gym’s west end would have to be replaced as part of the project.
