THORNDALE—After starting the 2020-2021 school term with “in-person” students going to class only two days per week, the Thorndale ISD will change to a four-day-per week format when students return Tuesday from the Labor Day holiday.

Principal Adam Ivy made that announcement Tuesday in a online video.

Ivy said the change does not affect the Thorndale ISD students who have started the school year on a remote-learning plan.

GROUPS—On Aug. 17 the 80-percent-plus TISD students who chose in-person learning went back to school in two groups.

Group A attended classes Monday and Thursday wile Group B attended Tuesday and Friday.

Wednesdays no classes were scheduled to enable custodians to deep-clean the schools.

Ivy said the Wednesday cleaning day will remain.

He said a survey asking parents and staffers if they desired a four-day week—as opposed to two days—resulted in overwhelming support for the four-day option.

“Seventy-five percent were in favor and that survey represented about 400 parents and 84 staff members.

In July, Thorndale ISD parents were asked to choose between in-person and online instruction and also whether parents would pick a split A-and-B day modified schedule over a fully virtual learning experience.

NO OFF-DAY—Ivy said the Wednesday “virtual day” is not to be viewed as an “off day.”

“Students are still going to be responsible for their work assigned to them on Wednesdays,” he said.

Ivy said, in addition to the campus cleanings, the midweek not-in-person-class day will allow instructors to work on lesson plans.
