As the Tigers enter the last stretch of the season, every game is now critical to earn a playoff spot and good seeding. The Tigers are currently tied for first place in the 11-3A standings. However, the Tigers will face a big test as the 6-2 Academy Bumblebees come to town on Friday.
“They (Academy) are extremely talented,” RHS Head Coach Jacob Campsey said. “Skill wise, they are as good as anybody in our district. They have guys that can make plays at every position.”
ROCKDALE—R H S arrives feeling great as they will enter the contest on a two-game win streak. Before last week’s bye, the Tigers had one of their best performances of the season beating the Caldwell Hornets 55-26. The Tigers’ offense couldn’t be stopped as they garnered a season best 569 total yards.
The Tigers’ defense continues to improve. After allowing 32 points per game through the first five games, the defense has turned things around by only allowing 17 points per game in their last two contests. The guys were solid against the pass against Caldwell making the quarterback go 10 for 21 and recording an interception.
Players to watch: Star running back Cam’ron Valdez had his best performance of the season against Caldwell with 239 yards and five touchdowns. Quarterback Kobe Mitchell had a great outing going 17 of 22 for 273 passing yards, 29 rushing yards and three total touchdowns. Both players earned nominations for the All-Brazos Valley Player of the Week Award.
ACADEMY—The Bumblebees are coming into Friday’s game with a great amount of momentum after defeating the Caldwell Hornets 48-22 last Friday.
The Bumblebees have been electric on offense this season averaging 30 points per game. Their 48 points against Caldwell was their highest point total of the season. On defense, the team has also been powerful allowing only 20 points per game.
Players to watch: Wide Receiver Jaylin McWilliams has been a problem for every team the Bumblebees have faced. McWilliams leads all receivers in the division in receiving yards with 490 and touchdown catches with eight. Quarterback Jerry Cephus ranks third in the district in passing yards with 982 on the season.
