Thorndale Independent School District closed on the purchase of 16 acres of land to the east of Stadium Drive on April 15, according to Superintendent Adam Ivy.
“It will more than double our current footprint and it is adjacent to our stadium,” he said. “We do not have specific plans for the land but it will likely be used to build a new high school at some point.”
The district board was reminded of the closing date at the April 12 TISD meeting in the Administration Building where members were also told that the high school graduation will be May 29 in the Taylor ISD events center starting at 6 p.m. Graduating seniors will be given a limited number of tickets to the ceremony.
The board will also meet, likely in a special meeting, to pick a bid from those received April 15 for a renovation to the high school.
“This is a safety renovation to relocate the HS office to create a secure entry vestibule,” Ivy said.
High School Principal Jennifer Parnham said that the SAT scores for the junior class would soon be in.
Ivy told the board of the need to have a summer school session to recover the estimated 3- to 4-month learning gap resulting from the school closures and the way in which school began last year due to COVID-19. He said it would likely require more staff than normal and he hopes that the federal stimulus money will be made available for it. Ivy also talked about conducting a stipend comparison survey to ensure that the district stays in line with surrounding districts of similar size.
The board voted to accept the resignations of Tamicka Cook and Randa Buchanan from the teaching staff.
