Rockdale Independent School District’s board of trustees met Monday in regular session and discussed changes going into the 2019-2020 school year.

Trustees also heard about the state of the transportation department and received an overview from maintenance director Lance Weidler regarding his staff’s summer projects.

HANDBOOK—RISD Assistant Superintendent Pam Kaufmann informed the board that the new district handbook was officially posted on the school website.

Kaufmann said that there were only a few minor changes. She also noted that one major change was the addition of the Community Eligibility Program.

The C.E.P. is a program that automatically qualifies all Rockdale Elementary and Intermediate School students for free breakfast and lunch.

Junior-high and high school students will still have to complete the application for free and reduced-price school meals form to qualify.

BUSES—Transportation Director Robert Hunter gave trustees an update on the district’s bus fleet.

“We have 20 buses,” Hunter said. “That’s a good number to have since we have 11 daily bus routes and we’re not really in danger of having a shortage when an extra-curricular requires a lot of buses.”

He also informed the board that all buses have undergone summer maintenance and are ready for the school year.

Hunter also gave recommendations on future repairs and told the district they were in need of two bus drivers.

“As of now, I’m driving a bus route every morning and I also have a substitute driving,” Hunter said. “If we lose one more, we’ll have to start combining routes.”

WAX—Weidler told trustees about his big summer project, stripping all the old wax off the campus floor and laying new coats.

He showed the pictures of the finished floors and praised his staff for all their hard work.

Weidler also told trustees that RISD athletic fields were ready for the upcoming season and that his crew was occupied with getting the outside of all campuses ready for the opening of school.
