In the final Rockdale ISD school board meeting of 2018 Monday, trustees decided to vote in February whether juniors and seniors can go off campus in the 2019-2020 school year.

In addition to discussing whether or not to keep student off-periods for juniors and seniors, administrators and trustees, meeting in the RHS library, heard a construction update and got an athletics enrollment report.

Trustees also congratulated RHS students selected as members of the Texas High School Coaches Association all-academic teams.

OFF-PERIODS—Primary topic of discussion was how many off-periods a junior and a senior can have during a semester and whether RHS should have them.

“I know my son has two off periods right now,” said trustee Lin Perry.

RHS Principal Tiffany Whitsel pointed out many top students have a demanding course load, and benefit from having an extra hour to study or rest.

She said that an off-period seemed more ideal for upperclassmen rather than having them taking a ninth-grade-level class.

UPDATE—RISD Maintenance Director Lance Weidler informed the board of the construction updates. He said that the field house has one remaining item on his list of things to do before the project is completed. He also said the softball field fence was finished, along with the press box.

“The only thing left with the press box is having Ace Audio come to install the stereo,” Weidler said. “We also have to install the scoreboard so it is usable.”

Weidler also informed the board that he had notified his staff that a commercial would be filmed at the softball field on Wednesday (see story, page 1A), and that they would need to work quickly this week.

Rockdale High School head football coach and athletic director Jeff Miller also spoke at the meeting.

Miller cited enrollment figures for each RISD sport.

Senior athletes Doss Hasselbach, Josh Davenport, Reyna Gonzalez, Kaylee Criswell, and Ryanne Young were also congratulated by the board of trustees for making the Texas High School Coaches Association’s all-academic teams.
