Just like many other school districts, the Rockdale ISD has not escaped the COVID-19 pandemic entirely.

Supt. Dr. Denise Monzingo told The Reporter on Tuesday that two high school students, who had tested positive for the virus earlier in the term, have completed all requirements mandated by the Milam County Health Department and have returned to classes.

“We are taking this extremely seriously and are following all the health department’s guidelines,” she said.

BUSES—Dr. Monzingo confirmed the district has received some feedback over lack of social distancing on school buses.

“The truth is you really can’t do that,” she said. “You would have only 10 kids on a bus. They are required to wear masks and their temperatures are taken. Anyone with a temperature is immediately turned over to school nurses.”

Also, school starting times are staggered, allowing bus routes to “double up” and carry half the students as usual.

“Neither of the two students testing positive were bus riders,” she said.

RETURNING—Dr. Monzingo said many students who started the semester in remote learning are now back in class.

“Ninety percent are back in class,” she said. “We only have 135 now in remote learning and 90 of them are in the elementary and intermediate grades.”
