United Way of South Milam County has fallen very short of its goal of $60,000 to $70,000 for the September 2024 Radiothon. The organization only received about $20,000 to disperse between 13 and 17 local non-profits that were seeking approximately $65,000 in funding for the current year.
“We are asking for anyone who hasn’t send in their pledge or anyone who would like to make a donation to send their donations in now, because it isn’t too late,” said fundraising chair Mary Lou Loehr.
United Way is a national network of more than 1,900 locally governed community volunteer organizations that work to create a lasting and positive changes in their communities for the past 125 years.
Some of the nonprofits that have requested funding this year are: Milano Volunteer Fire Dept., Minerva Volunteer Fire Dept., Thorndale Volunteer Fire Dept., VFW Post 358 Cares, Thorndale Cares, Hill Country Meals on Wheels (which serves Rockdale), Thorndale Special Needs Support Group, Rockdale Multi-Serve Senior Center, Pac-Pals and more.
Most funds are paid out quarterly. The first of the payments to those non-profits won’t be mailed until March. Donations are tax deductible and can be dropped off at T he Rockdale Reporter or mailed to: United Way of South Milam County P.O. Box 189, Rockdale.
Tanglewood VFD fish fry March 15
Tanglewood Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual Drive-Through Fish Fry on Saturday, March 15, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at 1041 West CR 415 in Lexington.
Plates are $15 for adults and $10 for children and include fish, fries, hush puppies and coleslaw. Homemade desserts will also be for sale.
