First day of classes in the 2019-20 school year will be Thursday in the Rockdale ISD and administrators are looking for an enrollment increase of about a dozen over August, 2018.

Thorndale ISD are the early birds, with classes beginning Wednesday (Aug.

15) while Milano’s first day is Wednesday, Aug. 21.

ROCKDALE—RISD Assistant Supt. Pam Kaufmann said the biggest increase is forecast for Rockdale High School, with enrollment as of Monday, put at 456, up 32 from 424 last year.

Junior-high enrollment is also up, from 349 last August to 359 this year.

Decreases are forecast for the other two campuses, with the elementary going from 364 to 350 and the intermediate from 327 to 311.

That’s a total of 1,476 expected on Thursday, compared to 1,464 on the first day last year.

Kaufmann said training during the past week included the Capturing Kids Hearts program (see above photo).

“Capturing Kids” Hearts shows teachers how to create high-achieving centers of learning by strengthening students’ bonds with their teachers and establishing collaborative agreements of acceptable behavior,” Kaufmann said.

She said each campus will focus on starting the year building trusting relationships with and between students that will support academic growth throughout the school year.

“We will also continue our efforts to offer more opportunities for parent input through district and campus committees,” Kaufmann said.

“We welcome all parents and community members who have ideas on how we can strengthen Rockdale ISD for our students and our community. Contact a campus or district administrator if you want to get involved,” she added.

MISD, TISD—Milano ISD Supt. Robert Westbrook estimates MISD will begin classes with about 450 students on Aug. 21.

In Thorndale Supt. Adam Ivy forecasts around 550. “That’s very similar to last year,” he said.
