Work on route that might turn into new I-14
Body

Construction is underway to bring a stretch of highway to near-interstate level up to the Milam County line.

That’s significant since the highway—US 190—has been touted as the eventual route of Interstate 14 all the way through Milam.

While the I-14 route has not yet been selected through Milam, the new $77.8-million construction project, that includes a bypass around the town of Rogers, would add to an already upgraded highway through Bell County, apparently ready for continuation into Milam.

In any event, when the 7.3-mile project is complete in early 2024, the upgrade will make the trip from Rockdale, or Cameron, to Temple much easier.

US 190 runs conterminously with Texas 36 in much of Milam and Bell counties.

UPGRADE—The new construction upgrade stretches from two miles south of FM 436—that’s one of the already interstate-like Heidenheimer exits—to the Milam line just north of the B&SF Railroad Overpass.

The stretch of 190/36 will see an upgrade from two to four-lane divided, an “almost interstate” configuration.
